Scottburgh Club Braai and presentation 13th August Good afternoon guys Just a quick note to let you know how it went last night. It was a cold windy night when we got there but after a bite to eat and a few drinks it warmed up very quickly! As I prepared for the meeting Dave Thomas, Mike Liddell and a few other guys lit the fire and cooked up the meat. Drinks were served (eventually!!!) by Alan (“Mountain”) Hill I managed to get some goodies from Gladiator Lures, Stealth, Erics, Shaun van Rensberg, and I sponsored some prizes. As was requested by email we asked members to vote in each category for the biggest fish, biggest Couta, biggest Tunny, biggest Snoek, biggest Kingfish. Not many of you replied so we did the vote on the night (after we had been drinking) Winners were Mike Liddell, (45kg Sailfish) Jeff Oberhozler (25kg Tunny), Stuart Ivins, (7kg Snoek) Trevor McAlpine (21kg Kingfish), Sean van Rensberg, (Couta 25kg) Don’t forget it was for the members to vote not the actual weight which caused lots of debate and amusement much to the delight of the wives and partners present. I then moved onto “other awards” like “the biggest one that got away” “the biggest shark sighted” “most consistent angler” “who paddled the most kilometres” “who drove to the beach looked at the sea and went home” the most times award (Joe won that one but Barry Mundel came a close second!!!) Anyway the highlight of the evening without a doubt was the presentation of an Erics fishing ski to “Mountain”. The story behind the ski was that Trevor McAlpine now has a new Kingy fishing ski so Trevor very kindly donated his famous ski to Mountain. I say famous because there is not another fishing ski seen as many fish as that one!!! I then said to Mountain that he could only have it only if he told us a funny story. What happened next I cannot possibly describe in words but my eyes are watering again thinking about it now? Mountain told the story of how he mistakenly hooked a Gannet and tried to get the hook out of its mouth. He grabbed it by the throat with one hand and put his fingers in its mouth to get the hook out only to find it had teeth! With a loud yelp he let the bird go and it proceeded to fly up into the sky. Not to be outdone Mountain then with the aid of very amusing animation demonstrated how to reel in a Gannet from the sky!!! When he eventually got it back down onto his deck it started screaming again. Mountains new tactic (just as Trevor paddles passed and witnessed this!) was to talk calmly to the Gannet saying things like “I’m not going to hurt you” and “Please calm down”. Just then the Gannet screamed loudly and tried to fly away again. Mountain quickly grabbed his priest (wooden baton) and tried to whack the Gannet. Not to be out done the Gannet ducked and Mountain hit his ski full on!!! At this point the Gannet pulled free from the hook to safely go and catch sardines and Trevor probably fell off his ski laughing at this incident. Thanks for the Entertainment Mountain. That brought the evening to a close with a few thank you’s to people. My wife Sue for putting up with me. My fishing buddies from the club especially Stuart whose enthusiasm rubs off on everyone. To Mountain, Mike and Russell for looking after the club, and to all my friends at the club. I have learned so much from these guys and will continue to do so. I forgot to say thank you to Dave Thomas the secretary for his hard work and Barry Mundel the safety officer. Thanks also to gary and Anton at Erics Canoe Shoppe for restoring Mountains new ski free of charge. Thanks guys. To the guys who missed the night I hope it as much fun next timeRegards Mick Clarke Chairman Scottburgh Kayak Fishing Club
